Successful Fire Test: EasySafeBox Keeps a Fire Involving Two Lithium-Ion Batteries Safely Under Control

SmoliTec prototype demonstrates its protective capabilities during a demanding fire test at the PORAVER Center

On September 1, 2026 – exactly one year after the founding of SmoliTec allgäu – the development of our EasySafeBox reached an important milestone.

At the PORAVER Forschungs GmbH facility in Schlüsselfeld, Germany, a prototype of the safety box was subjected to an intensive and realistic battery fire test under controlled conditions.

The result was a complete success: The EasySafeBox withstood the severe thermal and mechanical stresses without difficulty. The battery fire remained contained inside the box, the integrated EXTOVER® extinguishing agent performed its intended function, and the fire did not spread to the surrounding area.

Two lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of 520 Wh

For the test, two lithium-ion batteries, each with a capacity of 260 Wh, were placed inside the EasySafeBox.

A powerful Bengal flare was used to expose the batteries to extreme heat and deliberately trigger a major thermal event. The resulting battery fire involved intense flames and explosive reactions.

This created a highly demanding test scenario that placed the EasySafeBox under significantly greater stress than would normally be expected from a minor battery defect.

Despite the enormous amount of energy released, the fire event remained safely controlled inside the EasySafeBox:

  • The construction of the EasySafeBox withstood the thermal and mechanical stresses.
  • Flames and hot battery components remained safely contained inside the box.
  • The integrated EXTOVER® extinguishing agent was released and initiated the controlled extinguishing process.
  • Heat transfer to the exterior of the box remained extremely low.
  • According to the preliminary evaluation, the maximum external temperature was approximately 30 °C.
  • No surrounding objects or materials caught fire.

A small amount of smoke briefly escaped at the beginning of the fire event. This occurred before the extinguishing agent had been fully released and was able to develop its complete effect. The fire was then brought under control and extinguished.

Under the conditions of the test, no critical thermal stress occurred outside the EasySafeBox. The low external temperature meant that surrounding materials were not endangered and no fire spread occurred.

This is precisely the purpose of the EasySafeBox: A battery defect should remain a contained incident and must not develop into a building fire.

Protection before a battery defect becomes a major fire

Lithium-ion batteries have become an essential part of everyday life in companies, workshops, public facilities and private households.

At the same time, damaged, deeply discharged or overheated batteries can enter a process known as thermal runaway. During thermal runaway, the temperature inside the battery rises rapidly. This can result in intense flames, smoke, hazardous gases and explosive reactions.

The EasySafeBox has been developed specifically to control these risks. It combines a highly resistant double-walled metal construction with the mineral EXTOVER® extinguishing agent and a specially developed safety and filtration system.

In the event of a battery fire, the EasySafeBox is designed to:

  • contain the fire inside the box,
  • prevent flames and heat from spreading,
  • cover the affected battery with EXTOVER®,
  • remove heat and oxygen from the fire,
  • make reignition more difficult,
  • reduce escaping smoke and gases,
  • and protect surrounding goods, rooms and buildings.

EXTOVER® is a mineral-based special extinguishing agent made from recycled glass. When it covers a fire, it displaces oxygen and absorbs thermal energy.

At high temperatures, the material forms a closed mineral protective layer around the affected battery. This helps contain the fire reaction and makes reignition considerably more difficult.

A special success on our first anniversary

The fact that this important test took place exactly on the first anniversary of SmoliTec allgäu made the day even more significant for our team.

Within just one year, an initial idea has developed into a functioning prototype that has now demonstrated its protective capabilities under demanding test conditions.

The successful test confirms the fundamental technical concept of the EasySafeBox and provides an important basis for the next stages of development.

This prototype test does not yet constitute final product certification. Additional tests, technical optimisations and the planned certification procedures will follow.
