Old smartphones, worn-out power banks and used rechargeable batteries need a suitable place when returned for disposal. With the AkkuSafeBox, SmoliTec allgäu is developing a robust collection box for supermarkets, electronics retailers and other commercial take-back points.
Easy drop-off – controlled access
A compact opening on the front allows customers to deposit small batteries, rechargeable batteries, smartphones and power banks directly. The planned 100 × 50 mm opening limits the size of the items that can be inserted. An internal flap opens inwards during use.
For larger batteries and emptying, staff can access the box through the secured lid. This makes it easy to integrate the collection of small everyday devices into store operations.
A considered design with Extover®
The AkkuSafeBox combines a double-walled AlMg3 aluminium housing with an Extover® filling. The current design includes:

Two housing walls, each made from 1.5 mm AlMg3 aluminium.

Extover® Fine and Coarse granules as filling between the housing walls.

A 40 mm base panel made from compressed Extover® with sodium silicate as a binder.

Side carrying handles and a secured lid for staff handling.
The design aims to combine convenient battery collection with additional protective measures in the event of a thermal incident.
Developed for everyday use
Easy operation, durable materials and the needs of commercial collection points are central to the development process. The AkkuSafeBox is currently at the prototype stage. Its construction and features are being further tested and refined for the planned production version.
